NYMS Headquarters will open at 12:15 PM and stay open for an hour or so after Jan’s lecture:
In 1832 Joseph Lister introduced achromatic optics to microscopy. Just 45 years later Ernst Abbe produced the first set of apochromatic lenses; the tools were in place for the beginning of a golden age of light microscopy. This is when NYMS was founded.
NYMS’ antique instruments and books are treasures that allow us to look back in time and appreciate the legacy of the artisans who made the instruments and the scientists who used them. Among them, and central to my talk, is the life of Robert Tolles who was a pioneer of early high aperture immersion lenses and NYMS was one of the . Jan Hinsch witnesses of his genius.
