Kevin Costa
Vice President
Kevin D. Costa, PhD is Associate Professor of Cardiology at the Cardiovascular Research Institute (CVRI) at Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in NYC. He earned a Ph.D. in Bioengineering from UCSD, with postdoctoral fellowships at Johns Hopkins and Washington University in St. Louis. A founding faculty member in the Biomedical Engineering Department at Columbia University from 1999 to 2008, Kevin was then recruited to Mount Sinai as Director of Cardiovascular Cell and Tissue Engineering, where he is actively involved in teaching, mentoring and outreach, and recently served as Interim Director of CVRI. Research in the Costa Laboratory is focused on multi-scale biomechanics and mechanobiology of cardiovascular remodeling, injury, repair, and regeneration using techniques including atomic force microscopy (AFM), computational modeling, and 3D tissue and organoid engineering, using human-specific cell sources to ensure clinical translatability. With this goal, Kevin co-founded and is CSO for Novoheart International, Ltd., dedicated to revolutionizing the drug development process using engineering human heart prototypes. He has served on multiple editorial boards, and US and international grant review panels, and authored 10 book chapters and over 100 published papers.
